Matcha, or “powdered tea,” is a unique style of tea, produced in Japan, which has evolved over the years in a beautiful way with the culture and belief system of Zen Buddhism and Wabi Sabi. Originally produced in China, the custom of drinking powdered tea was brought to Japan around 1200 CE by Zen Master Eisai. Over the years, the process of growing matcha under shaded, careful watch was perfected, producing tea high in compounds that benefit the mind, as well as the body. Join Tea Sommelier, Lily Colonna, as she follows the centuries-old chado, or Japanese Tea Ceremony, that is typical of enjoying matcha, and experience the ritual, botany, and culture that are so valuable to the relationship between humans and tea.
